 Hang-ah Kim

8/2/21

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

For this lesson Hang-ah and I completed the third part of my four-part debate/expressing opinions lesson. For the first part I introduced a sample, introduced the vocabulary phrases, and worked with Hang-ah on an outline on a shared doc. For the second part, Hang-ah had to debate against herself with a new topic while I wrote down her responses and evaluated them. For this session we focused on the oral fluidity of expressing opinions. For this activity I gave Hang-ah a topic and gave her five minutes to get her argument together. I left the vocab phrases on the screen as we did this, but it was meant to be a back and forth roleplay. The topic was exploring US tipping culture. The topic argued whether it should be the customers' job to tip the servers, or if tipped wages should end all together, making the servers' wages the employees' responsibility. Hang-ah spent five minutes exploring the "against tip wages" argument, and then we began our roleplay.

We went back and forth, all the while using the phrases from the vocab. Between rebuttals I would stop and address anything that Hang-ah did well, as well as things that she needed to fix. After the roleplay, Hang-ah said that the phrases made her feel more confident because they provided her with a new structure to feel confident with when speaking to others. She said that she often gets anxious when speaking for too long because she feels that she starts to feel grammatically repetitive. For the final installment of this lesson, next session we will do another oral roleplay without any aid from the vocab list on the board, as well as less time to prepare.

Finally to wrap up the lesson we did two shadow boxes. The first one was "what goes up but never goes down?", and the answer was "age". The second one was "I shave everyday but my beard stays the same. What am I?" with the answer being, "a barber". So far, Hang-ah has been able to correctly ask enough questions to get the answer. I have some more difficult shadow boxes for next session.
