Hang-ah Kim

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

For this lesson Hang-ah and I discussed the second part of the debate/expressing opinion lesson plan. I created a plan for this topic that would cover a total of four sessions. We did the first part last session where I introduced the vocabulary/phrases and showed a sample of how to properly form a discussion using these phrases. We then discussed the topic of whether or not Pit Bulls should be pets. For this lesson, we built off of the previous lesson by having Hang-ah debate against herself. In this exercise, I would write down everything that she argued in front of the listed phrases for her topic on a shared doc. This way, after every one of her rebuttals, we could go back and iron out any of her mistakes.

The topic that I chose was whether or not people should be allowed to drink alcohol before the age of 21. I also provided some background information on the common complaints and arguments revolving around the topic. Additionally, this is part of the lesson plan that I presented in my teaching presentation. I had been experimenting with multiple of my lesson plans with Hang-ah, and she worked well with most of them. As this one required more practice, I was able to stretch this plan over four sessions.

For the last fifteen minutes of our session, I introduced a new segment that I will be doing at the end of the last six of our sessions. I got the idea for the segment from my favorite English teacher that I had back in middle school, Mrs. Day. The activity is called Shadow Boxing. Shadow boxing is usually referring to when boxers fight the air to train, however, in this case it is closer to the game "20 Questions". In this activity I put a type of riddle or hint in a box. Hang-ah then has to ask yes no questions about the box in order to get the answer. The catch is that she has to ask the questions without any grammar mistakes to get an answer. This keeps her engaged, while also making her stop and think about what she is going to say next. I realized that she did not forget her articles as much due to this rule. Today's shadow box said, "Is filled with water, but can hold water". The answer was "a sponge".
