Isabela de Oliveira Soares (Brazil)

8/1/21

8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Today Isa and I picked up where we last left off and discussed the show that she was watching. She explained to me that it was an anime called "Tokyo Revengers". The anime had a lot of complicated plot points, such as gang rivalries, time travel, and murder. I was impressed that Isa was able to express these plot points well enough that I could understand. There was a point when Isa was trying to explain the concept of the gang's internal politics, but it proved to be more difficult as the way that she wanted to explain the show used many low-frequency words. At this point she was inserting Portuguese into her English sentence, but then got frustrated while doing so. In a way it was like her brain was moving faster than her words could come out.

I then began to tell her about a show that I had been watching on Netflix called "Kingdom". The show is a Korean Drama that fuses historical Korea with zombies. The show has many intricate plot points including political struggles, resurrection, a zombie plague, and other aspects that were hard to explain in a simple way. I then asked her to summarize what I had told her about the show, and she was able to respond with almost everything, save for a few mistakes.

Another topic that we got on was on the topic of regional dialects in the US. We got on this topic after I made a joke in a thick Southern accent without thinking. I tried to give examples of as many regional US dialects I could think of, as well as point out some of the differences in words. One example was the difference between words like "Shopping cart" vs "buggy".
