Date/Time: Monday, August 9, 2021, 8-9 a.m.
Location: Zoom
Topic/Skill: Listening
Feedback provided to tutee: Today we did 4 short listening activities with a 5-question comprehension quiz for each. I played the listening clips 2-3 times each, depending on how difficult they were. For the first one, Je-won got 1/5 on the quiz, but for the last two, he got 4/5. I would play the clip twice, read the questions and answer choices out loud, then play the clip again one or two more times. For another one, I read the questions before playing the clip twice. He did really well on that one. I used the comprehension questions as a way to give him feedback, and his scores improved significantly as we moved on to other activities. For the first one, I wasn't sure if he could hear the clip (he told me he could) because his score surprised me. He was able to listen closely for specific details in the following 3 and got much better scores as we continued.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: At the end of our lesson, I asked Je-won if the listening clips were too hard, too easy, helpful, or unhelpful, and he said that they were too hard. After the lesson, I noticed that they were "for high-beginning ESL students" so I found some easier listening clips for next week. I thought he was doing very well, and I told him so at the end of our session. I think he could definitely handle the clips we were listening to today because he became more confident in his answers as we kept going.
