Feedback provided: Now that I know Dave's level when it comes to listening, we did a Level 3 listening activity on the Polar Ice Caps. In the dictation exercise, he got most words but struggled with some of the vocabulary which I noted. After this, I put up a picture of an elephant and asked him to describe it using some of the five senses. Then, I read a story about 6 blind men who each describe an elephant using their sense of touch. Finally, I asked Dave some comprehension questions based on what he heard as well as had him write a paragraph summarizing the story using the notes he took while I read aloud.
Things I learned: When it came to the dictation activity, I realized that the reason why he missed some of the vocab was because I did not build schema before the activity. I assumed he knew some English words because he is such a skilled speaker and because of that I will start working on building more schema in our lessons.
