Feedback Provided: Today I started Dave with a listening warm-up and dictation activity on hippopotamuses. He did well and this time because I made sure to go over some vocabulary before we started because I wanted him to make sure he understood the words and how to write them. After that we watched a clip from the movie "Inside Out" and I asked Dave questions about the sequence in which the emotions appeared as well as comprehension questioned that tested his memory and listening of the clip. After this, I read him a short story that sparked a lot of conversation about folktales. He had read the folktale before but noted that this version had different facets to the story and a slightly different ending. I explained to him that many folktales and myths work like that and how a lot of the time, the retelling of them might be slightly different but have the same message. Last week Dave and I worked together on writing the main idea of a story or clip, this time I wanted him to do it on his own and bring it back during our next session.
Lesson I learned: I learned how much schema building helped Dave get better at the dictation activities. Words he may have missed because he was so focused on spelling it right came easier for him once he saw the word and really knew its meaning versus having to hear it and have somewhat of an understanding but not enough to explain it back to me.
