Topic/Skill: Writing personal essays, specifically for college applications

Feedback provided to tutee:

Using one of my lesson plans for class, I went over what a personal essay was, read a model essay with her, and then dissected it. From that, we talked about what personal essays should include and how to structure them. She told me what qualities she wanted to showcase in her essay and what narrative she wanted to tell.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: 

I think my tutee is getting more comfortable with asking me questions, because before when I would always have to ask if she understood something to get her to communicate with me. Now, she will speak up and ask questions, and even brought up a question related to apartment-shopping in America to get my help with a phrase she didn't understand. Therefore, I think my lessons are helping to reduce her affective filter.
