 July 14th, 2021- I met with Paola at Sweet Shop for an hour. As usual we caught up a little bit and talked about our weekends. Then we started by going over the difference between acronyms and abbreviations. We talked about the differences, how to use them, when to use them, and how to pronounce them. Then we did some practice where I had her turn some words into the abbreviated version and had her try to guess what the full word or phrase was out of an acronym or abbreviation. (Her favorite one was PB&J). Then I had her read a short story about decoding a letter with homophones. I had her write a summary of the story and then we discussed what homophones and which ones were used in the story. Finally, I showed her a video about people from different states describing what their regional accent sounds like. After we discussed if she had heard any of these and which was the most interesting/hardest to understand. Since she is an advanced student I am finding that she knows the majority of the material I present but it is rewarding and exciting to find ways that go deeper and see her light up when she learns something new.
