Kinsey TS #4
I met with Samuel at the Hecht House at 3 pm on Wednesday, July 14.
Topic/Skill: Speaking, pronunciation of mountain, tired, work, and other difficult words
Feedback provided to tutee: I helped Samuel organize a 1-minute speaking presentation answering a specific question. We went over transition words and phrases commonly used when speaking, how to make speeches flow better, and general grammar issues. We went over the pronunciation of words that are difficult to Samuel many times, and we tried to think of creative ways in which he could think of the words to ease the pronunciation difficulties.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned when to draw back and let the student lead the activity, rather than me leading. It is easy for the English tutor to want to quickly give writing/speaking suggestions and edits, but it is valuable for English-language learners to try to figure out how they want to express themselves first, and then assist them when they ask for help.
