Devon TS #6

Hang-ah Kim

7/13/21

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

During this session we finished up our conversation regarding prepositions, and worked on some fixed dialogues. At the beginning of most sessions, we do a fixed dialogue that asks Hang-ah to think about her response to a prompt. The dialogues will also have situational themes. In this case, we were ordering food from an Italian restaurant. I roleplayed as the waiter, and Hang-ah ordered. I would ask a question, and Hang-ah would have requirements that would go along with her response. For example, I would ask, "What can I get for you ma'am?" and Hang-ah could reply however she wanted as long as she used "Calzone", "on", "with", "extra", and "add". This kind of role play aided in three skills. Firstly, it added to the preposition practice that we had been doing the past few sessions, it aided in life skills if needing to order food in the U.S., and finally it introduced new vocabulary words that opened conversation about American culture.

Following this activity, we watched a clip from the movie, "A Pursuit of Happiness". This clip covered issues such as sarcasm, passive aggressive American speech patterns, as well as idioms. We first covered the American passive aggressive speech patterns, and then we had a conversation about the application of this amongst friends vs. in formal settings. Finally, we introduced a few idioms, as that will be the center of the next session.
