Hang-ah Kim
Today Hang-ah and I went over how to properly build a debate and back up opinions. I first introduced the elements of a debate, as well as the key phrases that we would be using to build our debates. That included the following:
The Issue
The main
idea/thing is ...
In my
opinion, _____
Most
importantly, I want to mention that...
I believe
that
Therefore,
Listening in
a Debate
It's true
that____ but consider that, _______
I agree with
you that____ On the other hand, _____
I believe
that_____
I can
understand that_____. However, _______
Listing Your
Points
First of
all, ________
Firstly, ______Secondly,
______Thirdly, ______
For
starters, ______

Furthermore,
______
Not to
mention that_____
Ending Your
Argument
To recap,
______
My final
thought is _______
To sum up,
_______
Finally,
______
Agree to
disagree.
I then presented a sample debate that utilized multiple of the these phrases properly. We discussed the practical uses of each phrase, as well as what their purpose in the sentence was. We then read the sample debate together. Following this, we began to construct our own debate. The prompt was "whether or not pit bulls are too dangerous to keep as pets". I then acted against while Hang-ah worked for the argument. Using phrases from the proper category, we went back ad forth until we had a concrete debate. I then went back ad analyzed each phrase used, and offered corrections. Overall, this activity improved conversation skills, introduced cultural aspects through its prompts, promoted confidence in expressing opinions, and created an informal medium for speech.
