Sulaiman Alfarrj
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
7/8/21
Today I met with Sulaiman Alfarrj from Kuwait. We started with introductions and spoke a little bit about ourselves. Mr. Valentine provided us with a reading passage about six blind trying to figure out what an elephant is like. We broke up the story into pieces and I had Sulaiman read it aloud. Throughout the passage, Sulaiman would understand certain words when I said them out loud, however he would struggle connecting words to how they were written. By breaking up the passage into 2-3 sentences, he would be able to read through the sentences fully, before I corrected pronunciation or answered questions about unfamiliar words.
We also talked a little about Sulaiman's home culture. He asked about the word "rope", and said that he used the to pitch giant tents in the desert in Kuwait. He told me how families would sleep in these tents and look at the stars. After we finished the passage, we recapped the moral of the story, and revisited some of the vocabulary that Sulaiman did not recognize.
To finish up, we looked at an icebreaker activity where you use five words to describe yourself. We worked together in a google doc and organized our words. We did not finish the icebreaker activity in the allotted hour, so we will pick it back up next meeting.
