Today I met with Aziz, an upper intermediate student as CIES.

Date: 7/7/2021

Time: 3-4 pm

Location: Zoom

Topic/skill: Speaking, debates

Feedback Provided: Since Aziz was doing a debate in his speaking class, we practiced this for a bit. Aziz screen shared and showed me the website given with different points for each side of the debate. At first, Aziz spoke these points word for word from the website. After that, I asked Aziz if he could give me a one sentence summary of each paragraph in his own words so that he could process the reading more. Aziz did well at conveying each point, but he was a bit rushed and got the sentence structures jumbled a bit. We focused on conveying the points in a slower manner and told him he could take his time to think about each sentence for a bit, because his sentence structure is usually very good. Debates can be nerve racking, so slowing down helped a bit.

Lessons about Tutoring Learned: I really liked the idea of doing a debate in an upper level speaking class. It is engaging and fun for the students. I had not thought about doing this before!
