Alexa Scalchunes TS #2
Today I met with Aziz, an upper intermediate student from group 3/4.
Date: 6/30/2021
Time: 3-4 pm
Location: Strozier Library
Topic/Skill: Needs Assessment and Diagnostic, getting to know each other, practicing speaking with correct sentence structure, pronunciation, and grammar
Feedback provided: After getting to know each other a bit and doing the needs assessment, Aziz expressed interest in practicing speaking more. To do this, Aziz and I talked to each other and I would correct errors I came across such as grammar or pronunciation. When these corrections came up, we would briefly discuss why what he said was wrong and practice it for a bit. Aziz took all corrections wonderfully and was happy to learn more. He will need to speak during his presentations for his Masters degree in sports management, so this is a useful skill for him.
Lessons about tutoring learned: Before this lesson, I had not considered speaking practice too much. I viewed tutoring to be more like grammar practice and written work, so this was a refreshing lesson. I am hoping to be able to create speaking lessons for him so it is more like tutoring and less like conversation partner work.
