Alexa Scalchunes TS #11
Today I met with Aziz, and upper level CIES student.
Date: 7/19/2021
Time: 3:30-4:30 pm
Location: Strozier
Topic/skill: Speaking
Feedback Provided: Aziz went over his speaking project about Japanese culture. Though he did not have his full presentation ready, I asked him to give me a verbal summary about each section. Though Aziz normally uses very good sentence structure in conversational English, he struggles a bit when trying to find the words in a presentation format. After each section, I would stop him and we would discuss the mistakes he made. From here, he would try again or ask for guidance if he didn't understand why something was incorrect.
Lessons about Tutoring Learned: Critiquing Aziz on his presentation is a useful one on one skill for tutoring. I tried to find the best way to help him and ensure my corrections stick with him after. Certain patterns in his speaking were important for me to pick up on, such as the incorrect use of articles, so I tried to show these patterns to him and explain why, instead of just giving him singular corrections.
