Kinsey Kuhlman CO #3

I observed Dr. James for Advanced Reading this morning.

Date/Time: 6/23/21 11:00 am

Topic/Skill: Inferences

Teacher Presentation: Teacher used The Monkey’s Paw to teach inferences. There are many holes in horror films that you have to fill with inferences. The professor assigned students to answer questions individually that they will share with the class later. The professor incorporated cultural icon Stephen King into conversation. She talked about how tomorrow, they will talk about how they can tailor their reading logs to make it most efficient for them. Then introduced the next reading, presented SQ3R, and helped students begin the Scanning stage of the reading literature. Prompted students to highlight and define vocabulary words they are unfamiliar with.

Classroom Management: Dr. James encouraged each student to start their work promptly, and really answer genuinely. The first part of the activity was not facilitated by the teacher, but they came together at the end to share their answers.

Materials: Projector set-up, desktop, zoom, Youtube, Google docs, individual laptops for each student

Student Participation: Students each responded to questions individually before sharing with the class. Students were engaged in watching the movie.

Feedback Provided: Did not provide much feedback in person, but provided further readings and tasks for students as they finish. Dr. James encouraged students to give their personal impressions of each reading as well as three questions to start creating a comprehensive image of the reading.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I learned a bit about how to use the SQ3R method in practice as they began their first reading. I also learned how to incorporate online learners in worksheet activities by putting assignments on Google docs. In addition, I learned about incentivizing reading with movies.
