Kinsey Kuhlman CO #1
I shadowed Felicia Ciappetta for the Advanced Composition class.
Date/Time: 6/23/21 9:00 am
Topic/Skill: Academic research
Teacher Presentation: Felicia demonstrated how to navigate to the video tutorial online, and instructed students to watch the video individually and then find 10 research articles for their upcoming research paper.
Classroom Management: Felicia helped to ensure both Zoom and in-person students were able to find the tutorial video, and encouraged students when they groaned about finding so many articles. She made sure students were actually watching the video about 5 minutes after they dispersed for individual work.
Materials: Laptops for each student, desktop for teacher, projector and whiteboard, Canvas
Student Participation: Students each took their time watching the video, and began their research on their own.
Feedback Provided: There was not much critical feedback that I observed during this class, but students were encouraged to believe in themselves and not get overwhelmed by academic research. When one student could not access FSU research databases, Felicia provided alternate data bases for the student to use.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I spoke with Felicia about the timeline the students will follow to complete their research paper. From this conversation, I learned that it is important to divide the preparation work up into smaller, more digestible tasks over the course of several weeks to help students manage the stress and workload of a research paper.
