Dr. Angel Rios Reading Class with Group 3

Date & Time: 6/24/2021, 11:00 am

Topic/Skill: Reading Fluency, Budgeting/Money

Teacher Presentation: During class, Dr. Rios went over a passage with students. The passage was about 5 paragraphs long on money management and budgeting during college. For this, he introduced the topic and asked students questions about certain parts of the passage or asked them to explain a paragraph in their own words to the rest of the class.

Classroom Management: Dr. Rios was very interactive and fun with his students. Though some students seemed more reluctant that others, I could tell that there was not too much pressure for the students and they could learn in a fun, judgement free environment. As Dr. Rios called on students to read and explain paragraphs in their own words, he allowed them to interpret what they read and reproduce it verbally.

Materials: Computers, projector

Student participation: Students were all called on in this exercise by Dr. Rios. Every student participated and discussed with the class.

Feedback provided: Dr. Rios was very helpful when students summarized and answered questions. If they made a mistake or had a question, Dr. Rios was very nice in his answer or explanation. I could tell the students felt comfortable with Dr. Rios.

Lessons on teaching I learned: I liked how Dr. Rios encouraged students to verbally read the passage in their own words. Because they used their own words, they had to process what they had read, what they were going to say, pronunciation, and grammar all at once. I have not seen this strategy too much before, as question and answer formats is what most of my experiences have been, so I enjoyed seeing this strategy employed.
